Hi.

Welcome to my blog, everyone! I live and work in Zambia as a youth worker. Here you'll find tidbits of beauty that I find as I live, love, and serve.

Alright, Cool.

"Oh I can be April!" one of the students said as we sat around the supper cooking on large charcoal stands. She stood up and said "Alright, cool." Everyone cracked up laughing. It is apparently my signature phrase here at GLO-- my involuntary American phraseology that comes out when I am leading a session or activity. The students are right. And it reminds me that these students are observing and listening way more than we realize. But it is also endearing that they know my quirks and I know theirs. It is my turn and I stand up and start to act out the stiff walk of one of my favorite students.

I am loving the familiarity that comes with having been with these students for two months now. Relationships are growing between the staff and the students and I am loving the process.

Thank you all for your prayers for me and the students. Please keep them coming!
Much love,
April

GIVE NOW
  • While the students have been learning about relationships, stewardship, missionary vocation, and HIV prevention, the staff has been taking time to learn from our boss, David Lukama, about youth ministry in this context. It has been a time of practical learning and growth.
  • I have become the yoga instructor on Monday mornings. I love it. Followinng in my mom's footsteps.
  • I am also the swim instructor. Most of the students came here not knowing how to swim (only one knew). So I do lessons twice a week. This week I finally saw some encouraging progress...little baby Freestyles...and I jumped for joy and spashed everyone around me.
  • I got two kitties! Brother and sister that I rescued from a stray litter at a guesthouse in town. Sophia and Ralphie. They are active, cute, and keep me occupied. And the kiddos here love them.
  • I made a couch! Not gonna lie, I am pretty proud of myself. Finangled some free pallets, sanded and varnished them, bought foam mattresses and cut them into cushions and got my neighbor to help me cover them. Voila!
  • Last time I asked for prayer for the number of gap students to grow. We started out with 5 and now we are 18! It is such an eclectic group from all over the country and all different kinds of backgrounds. Please keep praying for the 18 that are here that they will continue to bond and learn about themselves and how to live together with others.
  • Please pray for funds. General expenses have been a bit more than expected so please pray fora few more  one-time or monthly gifts.
